Katie Mack has been recognised for her outstanding domestic campaign after being named the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) Player of the Year for the 2025–26 season. The award caps a remarkable period of consistency for the New South Wales Breakers batter, who now prepares for her first WNCL final.
Mack amassed 632 runs from 12 matches during the season, underlining her reliability at the crease. Despite the impressive numbers, she reacted to the recognition with characteristic humility, describing the honour as “unexpected.”
As she looks forward to the title clash with the Breakers, Mack acknowledged a mix of anticipation and nerves. “I’m so excited… but I’m also like, I don’t know if I’m anxious or excited. I’m already getting quite nervous,” she admitted, reflecting on the significance of reaching a final after more than a decade of effort in domestic cricket.
New challenge sparks career-defining season
Her move from the Australian Capital Territory Meteors to the New South Wales Breakers ahead of the campaign proved pivotal. Mack explained that the switch was driven by a desire for “a new challenge,” a decision that ultimately placed her at the centre of a successful NSW lineup.
Even while celebrating individual success, Mack emphasised the importance of the collective journey that brought the team to this stage. “Obviously we want to win but you don’t want to take away from how good the season has been,” she said, highlighting the group’s consistent performances throughout the competition.
Adaptability key to success
A notable feature of Mack’s season has been her willingness to adjust her role in the batting order. Traditionally an opener, she was asked to move positions to accommodate senior players such as Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry. Initially uncertain about the change, she recalled, “Originally, I was a bit ‘oh, I don’t know if I like that’.”
However, Mack soon embraced the shift, viewing it as an opportunity to broaden her skillset. “It’s been kind of fun to drop around (the batting order)… it was actually really nice. It was a bit of a challenge, and I did it quite successfully,” she explained.
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Mack stressed the value of the process and the effort required to reach the final. “There’s been so much effort gone into just making this one game… there’s lots to reflect on and celebrate,” she added.
As the Breakers prepare for the decisive match, Mack’s performances and mindset have already marked her campaign as one defined by persistence and growth.
