Ashleigh Gardner capped off an outstanding campaign by being named Sydney Sixers Player of the Season in the Women’s Big Bash League 2025–26. The award recognises a season defined by strong leadership, consistent performances, and decisive contributions, as Gardner emerged as one of the competition’s most influential captains.

Stepping into the captaincy role at the beginning of the season brought added responsibility, but Gardner handled the challenge with assurance. Renowned for her aggressive batting and effective off-spin, she added a new dimension to her game through composed and strategic leadership.

Her elevation to captain signalled an important transition for the side, and Gardner responded by providing stability through calm decision-making and proactive on-field choices. Across the season, she scored 143 runs in 9 innings, with a highest score of 50, while her overall tally for the Sydney Sixers reached 2750 runs at an average of 21.65 and a strike rate close to 120, including 14 half-centuries and one century.

    Strong Start Sets the Tone

Gardner made an immediate impact in her leadership role. In the opening match of the tournament, she produced a dominant all-round display that set the benchmark for the season. With the ball, she claimed 19 wickets at an average of 22.04 and an economy rate of 7.15, including her best figures of 5/15, which also came in the tournament opener on her captaincy debut.

    Consistency with the Ball

Her effectiveness with the ball remained a key factor throughout the campaign. Gardner consistently broke crucial partnerships and maintained tight control with disciplined bowling. Over the course of her career, she has taken 121 wickets at an average of 22.04, with her best figures standing at 5/15.

    Key Contributions with the Bat

As the season progressed, Gardner continued to deliver valuable performances with the bat. She established herself as one of her side’s leading contributors, stepping up in important moments while maintaining a strong strike rate. Her batting combined power with precision, often shifting momentum in favour of the Sixers.

    Leadership Impact

Beyond her individual performances, Gardner’s captaincy played a vital role in shaping the team environment. She encouraged emerging players to take responsibility while allowing experienced members the freedom to perform with confidence. Her presence brought composure, particularly in pressure situations.

Earning the Player of the Season award reflects not only her individual excellence but also her influence as a leader. In a competition featuring some of the top talent in women’s cricket, Gardner stood out through consistency, composure, and her ability to inspire those around her.

The 2025–26 season represents a major milestone in Gardner’s career, highlighting her progression into a commanding leader. Her performances have set a high standard, contributing to both her personal growth and the overall competitiveness of the tournament.
