India Women added another landmark to their remarkable T20I journey during the gold-medal match against Sri Lanka at the 2026 Asian Games in Nisshin.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s side reached the final after two dominant victories and, in doing so, became the team with the most Women’s T20 International appearances in the history of the format.
India Become Most Experienced Team in Women’s T20Is
The Asian Games final marked India’s 233rd Women’s T20 International, taking them past England to become the team with the highest number of WT20I matches played.
Australia remain third on the all-time list, followed by West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand.

India have featured in Women’s T20 Internationals since 2006. Across their first 233 WT20Is, India have recorded 132 wins, 95 defeats and six no-results, with no tied matches, giving them an overall win percentage of 56.65%.
Strong Record Against Asian Rivals
India have consistently dominated several Asian opponents throughout their WT20I history.
Before the Asian Games final, they had won 22 of their 25 WT20Is against Bangladesh and 25 of 30 meetings with Sri Lanka.
Pakistan have also struggled against India, with the Women in Blue winning 15 of their 18 encounters, while India have claimed 15 victories in 24 matches against West Indies.
The record is more evenly balanced against the traditional powerhouses.
India have won 9 of 39 T20Is against Australia, 12 of 38 against England, while New Zealand have enjoyed the upper hand, winning 11 of their 15 meetings.
Harmanpreet and Mandhana Lead India’s Modern Success
India’s growth in the shortest format has coincided with the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur and the consistent performances of vice-captain Smriti Mandhana.
Under Harmanpreet’s captaincy, India have collected several major achievements, including:
- Gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games
- Silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games
- Runners-up at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
- Semi-final appearances at the 2009, 2010, 2018, and 2023 Women’s T20 World Cups
India also strengthened their status as the most successful team in Women’s Asia Cup history by recently winning their eighth continental title after defeating Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana has continued to be one of India’s most reliable batters, scoring 4,788 runs in 171 WT20I innings before the Asian Games 2026 final while playing a central role in the team’s success across multiple generations. Mandhana then scored 79 in the Asian Games final and also crossed 11,000 international runs during the innings.
Dominant Route to the Asian Games Final
India entered the gold-medal match after two emphatic victories.
The defending champions defeated Japan by eight wickets after chasing down 58 in only five overs in the quarter-final.
They followed that with a commanding semi-final victory over Bangladesh, posting 195 for 4, thanks to Shafali Verma’s unbeaten 100 from 49 balls, before dismissing Bangladesh for just 81 to complete a 114-run victory.
Sri Lanka secured their place in the final by overcoming Malaysia in the quarterfinal and then Pakistan in the semi-final.
The gold-medal contest also served as a repeat of the 2023 Asian Games final, when India defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs, as well as a rematch of the recent Women’s Asia Cup final, which India won to lift their eighth title.
