Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana has reached another significant milestone in her illustrious career after being named in the inaugural Barbie Dream Team. The elegant left-handed batter has become the first cricketer to be honoured with a unique Barbie doll created in her likeness.

The special-edition doll has been designed to celebrate Mandhana’s achievements and journey in cricket. Unlike several celebrity-themed dolls that later enter commercial markets, this tribute is not intended for retail sale, making it a symbolic recognition of her influence both on and off the field.

Global Icons Join Barbie Dream Team

With the launch of the Barbie Dream Team, Mattel sought to recognise women who have achieved outstanding success across diverse professions. Mandhana joins an exclusive group that includes tennis great Serena Williams, astronaut Kellie Gerardi, Mexican racing driver Regina Sirvent Alvarado, England footballer Chloe Kelly, German singer Helene Fischer, climber Zoja Skubis and surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore.

Mandhana, regarded as one of the most stylish and consistent batters in contemporary women’s cricket, shared her reaction with fans on social media by posting images of the customised doll.

“Still processing this moment… Seeing a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll inspired by my journey is something I never imagined growing up,” Mandhana wrote. “Cricket has given me so much, and if my story helps even one girl believe she belongs on the field, that means everything.”

She also emphasised the broader significance of representation in sport.

“Honoured to be part of Barbie’s Dream Team alongside incredible women from around the world who are breaking barriers in their own fields. When girls see what’s possible, they dream bigger,” she added.

Recognition Comes Amid Strong Career Phase

Mandhana’s selection comes during a period of notable success in her career. Serving as vice-captain of the Indian women’s team across formats, she has continued to deliver consistent performances at the international level.

She recently returned to the top position in the ICC ODI batting rankings, underlining her stature as one of the leading players in the women’s game. Her contributions have frequently provided India with strong starts at the top of the order through her fluent strokeplay.

Beyond international cricket, Mandhana has also made a substantial impact in franchise competitions. Earlier this year, she captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women to their second Women’s Premier League title, demonstrating both leadership and match-winning ability.

    Inspiring the Next Generation

Mandhana’s journey — from her early days in Sangli dreaming of representing India to becoming a prominent global ambassador for women’s cricket — continues to inspire young athletes.

Her inclusion in the Barbie Dream Team reflects not only personal recognition but also the growing international visibility of women’s cricket. Over the decades, Barbie has evolved into a symbol associated with ambition, diversity and empowerment, and Mandhana’s presence in the initiative highlights the role of sport in shaping societal perceptions.

For aspiring young cricketers, her recognition sends a powerful message about opportunity and belonging in the sport.

As women’s cricket gains momentum worldwide, Mandhana’s honour serves as both a celebration of her achievements and a reminder that sporting influence extends well beyond the field of play.
