BCB Bans Former Selector Monjurul Islam Following Misconduct Inquiry

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially barred former national selector and manager Monjurul Islam from all cricket-related activities. The decision follows an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and professional misconduct brought forward by former women’s national captain Jahanara Alam.

The board confirmed the disciplinary action after a meeting on February 22, 2026, stating that Monjurul is prohibited from holding any future roles, direct or indirect, under the BCB’s jurisdiction.

    The Investigation and Findings

The inquiry was triggered by a formal complaint from Jahanara Alam regarding incidents that occurred during the 2022 Women’s World Cup. The five-member independent committee, chaired by Justice Tariq Ul Hakim, examined four specific allegations:

    • Substantiated Claims: The panel found “prima facie evidence” of inappropriate behavior in two of the four cases. The conduct was described as a clear breach of harassment and misconduct regulations under Supreme Court guidelines.
    • Unproven Claims: Two other allegations lacked sufficient evidence to be upheld.
    • Outcome: Despite Monjurul’s contract having already expired in June 2025, the BCB moved to “blacklist” him to prevent any future association with the sport in Bangladesh.

“The Committee noted behavior inconsistent with professional standards and observed that certain actions fell within the definition of misconduct and harassment.” — Official BCB Statement

New Horizons: Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL)

In a major step forward for the women’s game, the BCB also announced the schedule for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL).

    • Dates: April 4 – April 14, 2026.
    • Format: A franchise-based T20 tournament featuring three teams in its debut season.
    • Venues: Matches will be hosted at major stadiums in Dhaka and Chattogram.
    • Objective: To provide local talent with professional exposure alongside international overseas stars.

    Administrative Transition: Chief Selector Extension

The board has granted a one-month extension to the Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Gazi Ashraf Hossain (Lipu).

    • Reasoning: Hossain expressed his intention to step down at the end of his current tenure (February 28, 2026) due to personal reasons.
    • Succession Plan: The extension allows the BCB to maintain continuity while they finalize a successor and reorganize the selection panel. The board plans to advertise the vacancy to find a permanent replacement.
