Cricket Ireland is preparing for one of its biggest moments in recent women’s cricket history as the team gets ready for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.

After missing the 2024 edition, Ireland have successfully fought their way back onto the global stage through a strong performance at the ICC Global Qualifier in Nepal earlier this year. With a young and exciting squad ready for the challenge, full time captain Gaby Lewis is expected to play a major role in Ireland’s campaign.

Is Ireland Qualified for the World Cup 2026 in Cricket?

Many fans have been asking, “Is Ireland qualified for the World Cup 2026 in cricket?”

The answer is yes. Ireland successfully qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 after an impressive run in the ICC Global Qualifier tournament.

Ireland showed consistency throughout the qualifiers and secured their place in the main event with confident performances. One of the biggest reasons behind their success was captain Gaby Lewis, who finished as the leading run scorer in the qualifiers with 276 runs.

Her performances with the bat helped Ireland return to the Women’s T20 World Cup after missing the previous edition in 2024.

Ireland’s Lewis Rested for Tri Series Before World Cup

Even though Lewis remains Ireland’s most important batter, the team management has decided to carefully manage her fitness before the World Cup begins.

Ireland’s Lewis rested for tri series before World Cup has become a major talking point ahead of the tournament.

The Irish captain is currently recovering from a leg injury and will not take part in the upcoming home T20I Tri Series against Pakistan women’s national cricket team and West Indies women’s national cricket team at Clontarf.

Cricket Ireland wants Lewis to be fully fit and ready for the World Cup in June, where Ireland face a very difficult Group 2 campaign.

Orla Prendergast to Lead During Tri Series

In Lewis’ absence, star all rounder Orla Prendergast will captain the side during the Tri Series.

Prendergast is currently ranked number seven in the ICC Women’s T20I all rounder rankings and has become one of Ireland’s most dependable players. Once the World Cup starts, she will return to her regular role as vice captain while Lewis resumes leadership duties.

The temporary captaincy switch also gives Ireland an opportunity to test different leadership combinations before the global tournament begins.

    Ireland’s Important Preparation Schedule

Orla Prendergast will use the Tri Series and warm up matches to prepare for the difficult World Cup group stage.

The Tri Series at Clontarf Cricket Club includes matches against West Indies on May 28 and June 1, while Ireland will also face Pakistan on May 31 and June 4.

Before the tournament officially begins, Ireland will play two warm up games against South Africa women’s national cricket team on June 6 and Bangladesh women’s national cricket team on June 9.

Lewis to Lead Ireland in Women’s T20 WC

Lewis to lead Ireland in Women’s T20 WC remains the biggest positive for the team despite her short term injury concern.

Ireland will face strong teams like England women’s national cricket team, New Zealand women’s national cricket team, West Indies, Sri Lanka women’s national cricket team, and Scotland women’s national cricket team in Group 2.

With Lewis returning as full time captain and several young players eager to impress, Ireland will hope to make a strong impact at the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
