Southern Brave strengthened their grip on top spot in the Women’s Hundred standings with a five-wicket victory over London Spirit at Lord’s.
Captain Sophie Molineux produced an outstanding spell of 3 for 7 as Brave restricted Spirit to 114 for 8. Maia Bouchier then top-scored with 46 during a slightly nervous chase, helping the visitors reach 115 for 5 with seven balls remaining.
The result extended Southern Brave’s perfect start to five victories from five matches and strengthened their chances of qualifying directly for the final.
Molineux Delivers Remarkable Bowling Spell
Southern Brave once again demonstrated why their bowling attack is regarded as one of the strongest in the competition. Molineux led the way with exceptional control, conceding only seven runs from her 20 deliveries while claiming three wickets.
Her figures were the joint-second-most economical in Women’s Hundred history. Only teammate Lauren Bell has produced a better spell, taking 4 for 6 against Welsh Fire during the previous season.
“The pitch had a little bit in it for the spinners,” Molineux said. “I thought Tilly bowled really well from that top end as well and Glenny played a massive role there in the middle doing what she does best.”
Spirit Lose Early Wickets
London Spirit found it difficult to build momentum from the beginning of their innings. Molineux dismissed Amy Jones and Marie Kelly early, leaving the home side under immediate pressure.
Marizanne Kapp provided a brief counterattack at the end of the powerplay, striking Lauren Bell for consecutive boundaries to take Spirit to 22 for 2.
However, Southern Brave continued to apply pressure through disciplined bowling and intelligent changes of pace.
Glenn Tightens Brave’s Control
Sarah Glenn made an immediate impact after being introduced into the attack. The leg-spinner removed Grace Harris before dismissing Sterre Kalis, leaving Spirit heavily reliant on South African pair Kapp and Nadine de Klerk.
The two experienced all-rounders attempted to rebuild, adding 27 runs from 29 deliveries. However, the partnership struggled to accelerate against Brave’s accurate bowling.
Kapp eventually fell for 34 from 27 balls, caught by Jodi Grewcock at point off Tilly Corteen-Coleman.
De Klerk Provides Late Resistance
De Klerk briefly lifted the scoring rate by launching Glenn for two sixes.
Her counterattack gave Spirit hope of reaching a competitive total, but Molineux returned to dismiss Deandra Dottin before Corteen-Coleman removed de Klerk for 38.
London Spirit closed on 114 for 8, leaving them needing to produce the lowest successful defence ever recorded at Lord’s in the competition.
Kapp Strikes Early in Brave Chase
Spirit made an encouraging start with the ball when Kapp dismissed Lizelle Lee caught-and-bowled from the fifth delivery of the chase.
The South African all-rounder later returned to bowl the in-form Jemimah Rodrigues, giving the hosts a chance of applying further pressure.
However, the total of 114 always appeared difficult to defend on a good batting surface.
Bouchier Anchors the Reply
Bouchier held Southern Brave’s chase together with a composed 46 from 38 deliveries. She absorbed the early pressure and kept the scoreboard moving as Spirit searched for regular breakthroughs.
Molineux contributed 23 and helped bring Brave to the verge of victory.
The chase became briefly dramatic when both Bouchier and Molineux were dismissed with only one run required. Dottin completed an excellent catch at midwicket to remove the Brave captain.
Nevertheless, the visitors completed the chase with seven balls remaining to secure another comfortable victory.
Southern Brave Strengthen Final Hopes
Five consecutive wins have placed Southern Brave in a commanding position at the halfway stage of the tournament. Their bowling depth, led by Molineux, Bell, Glenn and Corteen-Coleman, has repeatedly given opponents little room to score freely.
London Spirit, meanwhile, remain on one win from their opening four matches. Although they are still in contention for an Eliminator place, they will need to find greater consistency during the second half of the competition.
Southern Brave’s unbeaten run continues, and their latest disciplined performance has made them clear favourites to secure the first place in the Women’s Hundred final.
