Welsh Fire Women have been dealt a significant setback in The Hundred Women’s 2026 after captain Sophie Devine was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to injury. The New Zealand all-rounder, one of the marquee signings ahead of the season, will play no further part in the competition, forcing the franchise to make immediate leadership and squad changes.

As part of the latest Sophie Devine injury update, Welsh Fire have appointed Australian all-rounder Georgia Wareham as the team’s new captain. The franchise has also signed Ireland international Orla Prendergast as Devine’s replacement for the rest of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Danni Wyatt-Hodge has also been ruled out of The Hundred with a calf injury. The England star represented the newly rebranded MI London Women, where she has taken on a key role at the top of the batting order.

Sophie Devine Ruled Out of The Hundred

Sophie Devine The Hundred news comes as a major disappointment for Welsh Fire, who had invested heavily in the experienced New Zealand international before the season.

Devine was appointed captain after being acquired as one of the joint-most expensive players at the player auction. Her experience, leadership, and ability to contribute with both bat and ball made her one of the most important members of the squad.

However, injury has brought her campaign to an early end, leaving Welsh Fire without one of their biggest match winners during the crucial second half of the tournament.

    Welsh Fire New Captain Announced

Following Devine’s absence, the Welsh Fire new captain is Australian leg-spinning all-rounder Georgia Wareham.

Wareham has already made a positive start in her leadership role by guiding Welsh Fire to a thrilling last-ball victory over Southern Brave Women. The dramatic win showed the team’s resilience despite losing their regular captain.

After the match, Wareham praised teammate Heather Graham for her match-winning performance.

“Credit to Heather, she played an incredible innings to get us over the line,” Wareham said following her first match as captain.

Her appointment gives Welsh Fire an experienced international leader capable of contributing in all departments of the game.

    Orla Prendergast Joins the Squad

To cover for Devine’s absence, Welsh Fire have signed Irish all-rounder Orla Prendergast.

Prendergast brings valuable international experience and has also featured in the Women’s Big Bash League, making her a strong addition to the squad. Her all-round skills are expected to strengthen both the batting and bowling departments as Welsh Fire continue their push for a playoff place.

Alongside players such as Georgia Voll, Heather Graham, Freya Kemp, Grace Potts, Em Arlott, and Sophia Smale, Prendergast will be expected to play an important role during the remainder of the competition.

Welsh Fire Still in Playoff Hunt

Despite the latest Sophie Devine injury update, Welsh Fire remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages of The Hundred 2026. The emergence of Heather Graham, the leadership of the Welsh Fire new captain Georgia Wareham, and the arrival of Orla Prendergast provide reasons for optimism.

Although losing Sophie Devine in The Hundred campaign is a major setback, Welsh Fire have already shown they can compete under new leadership. If their experienced players continue to deliver, the team will remain a strong contender for the playoffs in the weeks ahead.
