USA Women delivered a comprehensive all-round performance to secure a commanding nine-wicket victory over Italy Women in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 in Kigali. Chasing a target of 100, the United States reached the total with 23 balls remaining, thanks to an outstanding display from Player of the Match Sainavi Kambalapalli, who contributed with both bat and ball.
The result further boosted USA’s position in the tournament, while Italy were left searching for consistency after struggling across both innings.
Italy Struggle to Build Momentum
Italy’s innings got off to an early setback when Emilia Bartram was dismissed for 8 off 11 balls, despite hitting a six. She fell at 34/1 in the 5.1st over, caught by Taranum Chopra off Sainavi Kambalapalli.
Opener Alexia Kontopirakis held firm at the other end, anchoring the innings with controlled strokeplay. However, partnerships failed to accelerate, with Ilenia Sims contributing 9 from 18 deliveries before being dismissed at 51/2 in the 10.2nd over by Ritu Singh.
Further setbacks followed as Methnara Rathnayake managed just 2 runs before falling at 57/3, and Chathurika Mahamalage added 9 runs before becoming Kambalapalli’s second victim at 83/4. Kontopirakis continued to fight, but her innings ended on 49 off 56 balls when she was trapped lbw by Aditiba Chudasama at 85/5, narrowly missing a half-century.
Italy’s lower order could not provide the late push. Kumudu Peddrick scored 13 off 12 balls, while Emma Moore was run out for 2 and Dilaisha Nanayakkara fell for a duck. Italy finished on 99/8 in their 20 overs.
The USA bowling unit maintained discipline throughout:
- Sainavi Kambalapalli: 2/12 in 4 overs
- Taranum Chopra: 2/15 in 4 overs
- Aditiba Chudasama: 1/15 in 4 overs
- Ritu Singh: 1/18 in 3 overs
- Maahi Madhavan: 1/13
Sainavi, Chetna Set Up Comfortable Chase
In response, USA Women made a confident start with openers Sainavi Kambalapalli and Chetna Pagydyala putting on an 89-run stand. Their partnership ensured there were no early setbacks and laid a strong foundation for the chase.
Pagydyala scored 36 off 39 balls with three boundaries before falling at 89/1 in the 14.2nd over to Chathurika Mahamalage. By then, the result was largely decided.
Kambalapalli continued her impressive performance, remaining unbeaten on 52 from 51 deliveries, striking seven boundaries. She was supported by Isani Vaghela, who stayed not out on 7 from 7 balls as USA completed the chase at 101/1 in 16.1 overs.
Italy’s bowling effort saw Mahamalage pick up the only wicket, finishing with 1/7 in 4 overs, while Dilaisha Nanayakkara conceded 13 runs in 3 overs. However, the lack of breakthroughs made it difficult to defend the modest total.
Kambalapalli’s All-Round Display Makes the Difference
The match highlighted the importance of partnerships and sustained pressure in T20 cricket. While Kontopirakis anchored Italy’s innings, USA produced a more complete team performance.
Sainavi Kambalapalli’s impact with both bat and ball proved decisive, earning her the Player of the Match award and helping USA Women build strong momentum in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026.
