New Zealand have announced a 15-player squad for their three-match women’s T20I series against Australia, recalling Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James for the White Ferns’ opening international assignment of the 2026-27 season.
Captain Amelia Kerr will once again lead the side as New Zealand begin preparations for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027.
Carson Returns After Injury Lay-Off
The biggest inclusion is off-spinner Eden Carson, who returns after recovering from elbow surgery that kept her sidelined since December.
Carson, who has represented New Zealand in 51 internationals, strengthens a spin attack that also features Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire.
Fast bowlers Hannah Rowe and Molly Penfold also return to international cricket, adding experience to the pace unit following the retirements of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu.
Bella James comes back to strengthen the batting line-up after Suzie Bates’ retirement from international cricket.
White Ferns Begin New Chapter
The squad reflects New Zealand’s transition following the retirements of several experienced players after the recent T20 World Cup.
Rowe and James both gained valuable match practice with New Zealand A during the winter tour of Sri Lanka, while Penfold recently featured for Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition.
James has previously represented New Zealand in one T20I and two ODIs, while Penfold has played 11 T20 internationals since making her debut in 2022.
Polly Inglis to Keep Wickets
New Zealand will be without regular wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze, who recently underwent surgery on a persistent thumb injury.
She is expected to return during early 2027, with Polly Inglis taking over the wicketkeeping duties for the Australia series.
Brownlie Takes Charge
Dean Brownlie will oversee the tour as interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s departure last month.
The former New Zealand batter believes the squad has the right combination of experienced internationals and emerging talent.
“We’re excited to welcome back Eden, Hannah, Molly and Bella. There’s a balance of experience and future focus in this squad and it’s a great opportunity to test ourselves against one of the strongest teams in the world,” Brownlie said.
He added that playing Australia would provide an ideal opportunity for the group to continue developing ahead of future ICC tournaments.
