Australia Women wrapped up the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh Women with a commanding nine-wicket victory in the second ODI at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Although Sobhana Mostary produced a historic maiden ODI century for Bangladesh, Georgia Voll’s unbeaten hundred powered the hosts to a comfortable chase as Australia secured a 2-0 series lead.
Mostary and Joty Rescue Bangladesh
After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh suffered an early collapse and slipped to 8/3 inside eight overs. Megan Schutt removed Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter, while Kim Garth dismissed Sharmin Sultana to leave the visitors in deep trouble.
Sobhana Mostary and captain Nigar Sultana Joty then transformed the innings with a remarkable fourth-wicket partnership of 195 runs.
Mostary compiled a superb 118 from 134 deliveries, striking 18 fours to register her maiden ODI century. Nigar remained unbeaten on 74 from 114 balls as Bangladesh recovered to post 220/6, their highest-ever ODI total against Australia.
Schutt returned late in the innings to remove Mostary and finished with impressive figures of 4/36.
Mostary Rewrites Bangladesh Record Books
Mostary’s landmark innings created several milestones for Bangladesh women’s cricket.
She became:
- The highest individual scorer for Bangladesh Women in ODIs with 118.
- The first Bangladesh woman to score an ODI century against Australia.
- The third Bangladesh woman to register an ODI hundred after Fargana Hoque and Nigar Sultana Joty.
The 195-run stand between Mostary and Joty also set records:
- Bangladesh’s highest partnership for any wicket in women’s ODIs.
- The highest partnership for any wicket against Australia in women’s ODIs.
Voll and Litchfield Dominate the Chase
Australia made light work of the target from the outset. Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield shared an opening partnership of 162 runs, putting the result beyond Bangladesh’s reach before the halfway stage of the innings.
Litchfield struck 70 from just 51 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six before falling to Shorna Akter.
Voll continued the assault, bringing up her half-century in 34 deliveries before reaching her century from only 81 balls. She remained unbeaten on 131 from 97 deliveries, smashing 19 boundaries to register her third ODI hundred.
Ellyse Perry finished unbeaten on 19 as Australia reached 222/1 in only 28.1 overs, completing the chase with 131 balls remaining.
Australia Seal the Series
Despite Bangladesh producing their highest-ever ODI total against Australia, the home side’s dominant batting display ensured another comprehensive victory.
Voll was named Player of the Match after her unbeaten century guided Australia to a nine-wicket win and a 2-0 lead in the series.
The third and final ODI will be played at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on October 14, with Australia aiming for a clean sweep while Bangladesh look to finish the series on a positive note.
