Rwanda Women secured a composed six-wicket victory over Italy Women in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, successfully chasing 124 with three balls to spare.

Rwanda Strike Early to Restrict Italy

Italy Women, after winning the toss, chose to bat but were immediately put under pressure by Rwanda’s new-ball attack. Rosine Irera and Belise Murekatete made early inroads, reducing Italy to 2 for 2 in the second over with both Methnara Rathnayake and Hinanshi Daluwatta dismissed for ducks.

A recovery followed through a 64-run partnership between Ilenia Sims and Alexia Kontopirakis. Sims top-scored with 37 off 39 balls, including four boundaries and a six, while Kontopirakis contributed 32 from 38 deliveries.

Emilia Bartram added momentum towards the end with 24 off 20 balls, helping Italy post 123 for 7 in their 20 overs. Irera finished with 2 for 17, while Henriette Ishimwe maintained control with 1 for 16.

    Utagushimaninde Sets the Platform

Rwanda’s chase was built on a strong opening stand between Fanny Utagushimaninde and Gisele Ishimwe. The pair added 58 runs, laying the foundation for the chase.

Utagushimaninde led the scoring with 36 off 30 balls, striking three fours and a six, while Ishimwe anchored the innings with a steady 17 from 30 balls to ensure stability.

    Middle-Order Calm Seals the Chase

Italy’s bowlers fought back during the middle overs, with Dilaisha Nanayakkara and Ilenia Sims picking up wickets, along with a run-out that left Rwanda at 102 for 4.

However, Clarisse Uwase and Belise Murekatete held their nerve to guide the hosts home. Uwase remained unbeaten on 20, while Murekatete added a quick 16 not out from 12 balls to close out the match.

Rwanda reached 126 for 4 in 19.3 overs, sealing victory in the final over.

    Rwanda Maintain Momentum

Fanny Utagushimaninde was named Player of the Match for her crucial contribution at the top of the order, as Rwanda continued their strong run in the tournament with a controlled performance under pressure.
