In a landmark move for the sport in South Asia, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially announced the launch of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) T20. This inaugural franchise-based tournament is scheduled to run from April 3 to April 15, 2026.

The league represents a long-awaited professional platform for the nation’s cricketers, designed to bridge the gap between domestic and international standards.

    WBPL 2026: Tournament Structure

The debut season will feature a controlled format to ensure high organizational standards and competitive balance:

    • Number of Teams: The inaugural edition will showcase three franchise teams.
    • Player Selection: Local players will be recruited through a player draft system, aimed at distributing talent evenly across the squads.
    • International Presence: Each franchise is permitted to sign overseas professional players, providing local emerging talent the chance to play alongside global stars.
    • Tournament Format: The competition will likely follow a double round-robin format followed by playoffs and a final.

A Stepping Stone for Global Success

Bangladesh national team captain Nigar Sultana Joty expressed immense excitement, noting that the league arrives at a crucial time. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for later in 2026, the WBPL serves as the perfect preparation ground.

“If you want to compete in world cricket in the T20 format, you have to look at how other countries are progressing through franchise cricket… for us, this would be a very good opportunity.” — Nigar Sultana Joty

    Impact on the Domestic Ecosystem

The BCB expects the league to yield several long-term benefits for the recreational and professional game:

    1. Talent Identification: Unearthing new domestic talent through the draft and high-pressure match scenarios.
    2. Professional Development: Exposing local cricketers to the professional environment and training regimens utilized in major global leagues like the WPL or WBBL.
    3. Increased Visibility: Elevating the profile of women’s sports in Bangladesh to attract more commercial sponsorship and media interest.
