Brazil Women produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Botswana Women by 83 runs in the opening match of the Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament 2026 in Gaborone.

The contest saw Brazil recover from an early setback to build a strong total before delivering a clinical bowling display to secure a one-sided victory.

Brazil’s innings began on a shaky note as Laura Agatha was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Wendy Moutswi at 1/1 in 0.2 overs. The early pressure continued when Lindsay Boas, after scoring a quick 7 off 5 balls, also fell to Moutswi, leaving the side at 19/2 in 2.2 overs.

Avery and Cardoso Rebuild with Match-Defining Stand

From that point, Roberta Avery and Laura Cardoso turned the innings around with an unbroken partnership that anchored and accelerated the scoring.

Avery compiled a steady 59* off 63 balls, striking five boundaries, while Cardoso matched her with a fluent 59* off 52 deliveries, also hitting five fours. Their stand combined careful shot selection with effective running between the wickets, gradually shifting momentum in Brazil’s favour.

Botswana’s bowlers, after making early inroads, found it difficult to break the partnership. Wendy Moutswi was the standout with 2/29 in four overs, while Tuelo Shadrack (4-0-22-0) and Goabilwe Matome (4-0-25-0) maintained control without breakthroughs. Brazil finished on 147/2 in 20 overs, aided by 22 extras.

    Botswana Struggle in Chase

Chasing 148, Botswana Women never gained momentum as wickets fell regularly. Oratile Kgeresi was dismissed for a duck in the opening over, and the top order struggled to build partnerships.

Laura Mophakedi (11 off 22), Wendy Moutswi (2 off 12), and captain Tuelo Shadrack (2) were unable to steady the innings, leaving Botswana at 15/4 in 5.1 overs.

Pako Mapotsane provided some resistance with 28 off 25 balls, including three fours and a six, and added a brief stand with Merapelo Phiase, who scored 10 off 14 deliveries. However, the required rate continued to rise, and the lower order could not offer significant support.

Botswana were eventually bowled out for 64 in 16 overs.

    Brazil Bowlers Seal Comprehensive Win

Brazil’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance to close out the match. Lara Moisés led the attack with figures of 3/6 in three overs, while Maria Ribeiro (2/5) and Lindsay Boas (2/5) were also highly effective. Laura Cardoso contributed with 1/8 to complete a strong all-round display.

Cardoso was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 59, a wicket, and two catches in the field.

The victory provided Brazil Women with an emphatic start to the tournament, underlining their strength across departments.
